The single-channel Marshall JMP 2104, built from 1975 to 1981, was the 2×12 Combo version of the JMP 2204 50 watt head and one of Marshall’s earliest Master Volume designs.
Here we’re looking at a Marshall JMP 2104, built at Marshall’s shops in Bletchley during 1979 (serial number: 03891L, L signifying 1979 production) – one of the last series before the design was updated, the naming changed, and the JCM800 came on the scene in 1981. It delivers 50 watts through a pair of 12 inch Celestion G12-65 speakers. These amps, as with most other Marshall models after 1973, use printed circuit board construction, as distinct from expensive and time-consuming hand wiring.
The Marshall JMP 2104 is well regarded for the quality of its tone. The two twelves give it a big, open sound and it excels at those dynamic brit crunch tones that have bite, but are somehow creamy too! It’s a solidly built amp, with a finger-jointed Birch ply cabinet. This solid construction does mean that the amp has some heft, and it comes out to approximately 65 pounds or just under 30 kilos.
This amp is in excellent condition considering it's 43 years, but as happens over time, the tolex covering has one or two tears, nothing too bad and the worst of which are thankfully on the back (see pics). It is in good working order, and has been professionally fully serviced and PAT-tested recently. It has that full, rich, Marshall tone with undeniable presence - you really don't see too many of these now, especially in this condition. A great investment!
